The al-Qahira Fortress is a formidable mountain stronghold built in the twelfth century CE by Queen Arwa bint Ahmad al-Sulayhi, then reinforced and expanded under the later imams, especially Imam al-Qasim ibn Muhammad in the seventeenth century. For long periods it was the seat of rule and administration for Amran, managing the region’s military and political affairs, and it withstood several sieges throughout history.
