Identity and history of the souq

A historic souq dating to the tenth century CE, embodying the spirit of traditional Yemeni trade. Named for the salt trade imported from al-Hudaydah, today it covers all goods. It stretches 800 metres and branches into 40 specialised markets.

Sections and goods

• The silver souq: traditional jewellery and inlaid jambiyas
• The perfumers’ souq: spices (turmeric, cardamom, saffron), frankincense and honey
• The copper souq: engraved copperware, coffee pots and cups
• The henna souq: natural Yemeni henna and traditional adornments
• The textiles souq: cotton and silk fabrics and embroidered burqas
