Its construction is attributed to Aban ibn Uthman ibn Affan in the second century AH, a symbol of the early Islamic presence in Yemen.

One of the oldest mosques in Yemen and an important witness to the early spread of Islam in southern Arabia. The mosque has been renewed and restored several times over the centuries.
