Historical and scholarly value
The Aidarus Mosque is one of the most important historic mosques in Aden and a prominent scholarly and religious centre for centuries. Its name is linked to the scholar Sheikh Abu Bakr ibn Abd Allah al-Aidarus (d. 1508 CE), one of the most revered saints and Sufi scholars of Yemen and India. The mosque was the seat of his zawiya and school, which produced many scholars, and it became a shrine and pilgrimage for the people of Aden and visitors seeking blessing. The mosque reflects the successive architectural layers of Aden from the Rasulid to the Ottoman eras.
