About Taiz Governorate

Taiz Governorate lies in south-western Yemen, about 256 kilometres from the capital Sanaa. It is the second most populous governorate of Yemen, and its capital Taiz city was the capital of the Rasulid state from 1229 to 1454 CE, giving it a distinctive cultural and civilisational character. Taiz is famous for its strategic position on the trade route between Aden and Sanaa, and for its famous citadel overlooking the city from above Jabal Sabr, the highest mountain peak in Yemen. Throughout history Taiz was a centre of learning, literature and arts, producing many scholars, writers and poets, earning it the title "capital of Yemeni culture".
